With summer right around the corner were itching to get outside and start our warm adventures! But to enjoy the blue skies and summer sun you have to be prepared with the right gear. Everyone knows that preparation is the key to comfort so whether it’s a day trip or a two week adventure, here are some of our summer travel essentials we NEVER leave the house without!
We love this brand we discovered last summer on our travels exploring the South Eastern United States! Sleek, comfortable and affordable with a HUGE selection make Quay a home run to shade the eyes!!
A hat can not only keep you protected from the elements but also provide a low key look or make you pop from the crowd. Which ever way you’d like to rock it, it’s no doubt a traveling essential. Here are a few of our favorites we like to bring with us on our travels!
A waterproof bag didn’t seem useful to us until the one time we needed it and now we don’t leave the house without it! That’s usually how things go isn’t it?? But seriously if your trekking through the mountains and have to cross a river with electronics, jump out of a boat to swim to shore, make a quick exit when the unexpected tropical rain storm appears in minutes a waterproof bag makes traveling worry free when it comes to worrying about things getting wet!
We’re readers, plain and simple. And even if your not a voracious reader, the Kindle is a great addition to a packing list for so many reasons! First off books might not weigh much (paperbacks) but they are bulky and especially if you have more than one, they can take up valuable space. Secondly they provide a great entertainment back up. Long travel distance between destinations can drain you and your phone so having an option to read is always great but also having multiple options at your fingertips only makes it better! And lastly Kindle books tend to be cheaper than the hardcopies and are available instantly!
The Kindle Oasis – $250
The Kindle Paperwhite – $130
Comfort is everything in life, not just while traveling. But during the summer months, comfortable, breathable footwear is an absolute must! This is more of a ‘to each their own’ type of suggestion be we LOVE Chacos! They can take some time to get used too and fresh out of the box they can seem a little stiff but after they’re broken in and adjusted to the straps they are the best! Comfy, durable, loads of fun colors, and definitely breathable they are our open toe shoe of choice when traveling during the summer!
Being in the hot sun during the summer means you need to stay hydrated in order to keep on going! Whether exploring a city or watching your kids soccer game hydration is key, but dealing with and storing water bottles can be a hassle. Not only do you have to keep up with them but they also tend to warm up pretty quick while sitting in the sun. This is why we love our Camelbak backpack! It provides a ton of water storage inside of a backpack so it stays cool for longer plus a keep all your daily needs in the pack as well!
Purify your water when you go camping. Just do it. It doesn’t give you a trail cred that you sip straight from the river and even if it does it will go away when you have Giardia for a week and can’t trek because of the constant diarrhea. So yes, treat your water. This also goes for those trips to countries where the water isn’t the best to drink!
It’s here, it’s brand new, and it’s awesome! GoPro has really raised the bar when it comes to video stabilization from a small hand held or mounted action camera. Last years HERO 6 did a pretty good job but could only shoot stabilized video at 30fps and could still be shaky at times. Now, the new HERO 7 allows video to be shot in 4k at 60fps with the new ‘Hypersmooth’ electronic image stabilization setting active. If you don’t believe us go check out the now hundreds of reviews between different cameras and the HERO 7 to see the proof! Waterproof, 4k, stabilized video and can be mounted to almost anything…what more could you ask for in a camera that fits in your pocket?
Now this would be for the adventurer that either is always without power outlets or the traveler who just forgets to use them. Either way mistakes happen even when you’re so far out in the wilderness and an extra charge is always nice. External batteries come in many designs with different features. For the one always out in the wilderness look features such as rechargeable with solar energy, shock/water/dust resistant, flashlight, compass, multiple outlets but most importantly if its needed for long periods of time look for the one with the biggest power bank for the least amount of weight. This can be key for when your pack is getting heavy. As for the other adventure, again consider the weight and storage of the charger as well as number of ports and charging options. In the link is a simple, high capacity charger from Anker who is one of the respected names in this type of product. PS – along with features to consider when buying one of these is the actual charging capacity (measured in mAh), where the higher the number the larger charging capability.
There’s a soundtrack to every season but summer is an essential time to have tunes on you at all times! You never know when you’ll come upon that perfect spot on the lake or in the park and need to have tunes available for everyone to enjoy! Were a big fan of the UE speakers. We have a couple of the booms and discs to easily slide or clip onto a backpack! Great sound quality, durability and waterproofing will keep you jamming all summer long!
This is a great gift for the traveler who always seems to be on a plane, train, or long car rides. Yes, we’re talking about the sleeper. Neck pillows are nothing new. There are the OG uncomfortable stiff foam block, the micro beads that never seem to settle in the right position, speakers, massagers, wires and strings all of which can be a hassle for sub par comfort… until now! The Trtl pillow lets you, dare I say, actually enjoy the middle seat, as it’s a fleece wrap with a neck brace that is so simple it’s hard to believe we just found out about it. Great for planes and trains that seem to be freezing the entire voyage and no more falling asleep on the random person next to you.
